‘A Trained Dog is a Happy Dog’: the principles behind every K-9 Handler® session.
- 1
Build trust through calm, consistent interaction. Keep practice manageable for your dog and finish with something familiar.
- 2
Choose one clear cue for each skill and use it consistently. Make sure everyone in the household follows the same approach.
- 3
Practice in a quiet place before adding distractions. Work on one small step at a time and notice the behavior you want to encourage.
- 4
Avoid scolding after an accident. Your dog needs help learning what to do next; ask Ira how to adjust the routine and practice.
- 5
If your dog seems frightened or overwhelmed, give them space. Ask for guidance before pushing ahead, and consult your veterinarian about sudden behavior changes.
