Ira Smith, training dogs since 1974, explains why every dog starts with a solid foundation: training the owner, basic commands and clear communication.
Training dogs since 1974
I've been training dogs since 1974, when I earned my first certification as a U.S. Air Force Military Working Dog Handler, working with protection and detection dogs. Fifty-two years later, I'm still using much of what I learned, along with techniques I've developed through decades of experience.
After moving to Las Vegas, I spent many years working in the casino industry while continuing to train dogs. Eventually, dog training became my full-time profession. Today, I'm an AKC instructor and evaluator, as well as a tester/observer for the Alliance of Therapy Dogs.
My training system originated from U.S. Air Force military working dog methods, which I've adapted over the years for family pets, therapy dogs and service dogs. Regardless of the dog's purpose, everything begins with a solid foundation.
Training the owner and the dog
I believe training the owner is just as important as training the dog. Basic commands such as heel, sit, down and stay establish communication, consistency and trust. Dogs need to understand what we're asking of them, rather than simply anticipate our next move. This helps him think and react instinctively.
Obedience training and behavior modification
At The K-9 Handler, we also address behavioral problems such as jumping, excessive barking and digging. Obedience training and behavior modification are different, but they work together to develop a well-mannered dog.
Where and how I train
I prefer training in regular parks rather than dog parks, where distractions and uncontrolled activity can interfere with learning.
Ideally we will be doing training that will include public behavior modifications in places like Home Depot and Lowe’s.
My goal is to teach dogs through repetition, instinct and habit while helping owners understand how their dogs think and communicate.
Piper and Service Dogs of Southern Nevada
Over the years, I've trained thousands of dogs, each with its own personality and challenges. My late service dog, Piper the Wonder Dog, was a special part of my business and helped me train countless other dogs. Many of my clients have become lifelong friends.
That same training philosophy is the foundation of Service Dogs of Southern Nevada, the nonprofit I founded in 2012 to help veterans, first responders and others in need obtain properly trained service dogs.
A solid foundation and clear communication
After 52 years, one thing hasn't changed: successful dog training begins with a solid foundation and clear communication between the dog and its owner.
The K-9 Handler is a proud member of the 702 Alliance, supporting local businesses throughout the Las Vegas Valley.
