The rates page also says all training includes AKC title certifications. The Canine Good Citizen (CGC) is an American Kennel Club program that ends with a 10-point test given by an approved evaluator.
What happens at the $199 in-home evaluation?
The evaluation is a 2–3 hour visit at your home where Ira assesses your dog and training starts the same day. It is listed at $199 and is included in every package.
This first visit is an actual working session. Ira assesses your dog, starts training, and you leave with a plan and a straight answer about what to expect. If you are thinking about group classes, readiness for the group is also decided at the evaluation.
You are part of every session. The packages include owner/handler instruction, so you learn how to keep practicing between visits.
Which package fits your dog?
Basics suits owners who want a shorter start. Puppy–Adult Fundamentals is built for puppies and young dogs. Advanced Obedience Skills is for owners who want off-leash work and the most practice.
Basics, a shorter start: Basics covers the core commands in six sessions. It is a fit if your main goals are everyday obedience, such as walking at your side, sitting, staying and coming when called. You can add 8 group gatherings for $189 if you want practice around other dogs. See what this covers on the obedience training page.
Puppy–Adult Fundamentals, for puppies and young dogs: Fundamentals adds four more private sessions and 15 group gatherings. The focus is communication, socialization and manners, and the package is built for puppies and young dogs. The puppy training page explains what puppy work covers, including AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy preparation.
Advanced Obedience Skills, the most practice: Advanced includes 15 private sessions and the full group season. It adds on- and off-leash obedience, drive therapy and behavioral modification throughout the program.
When the hourly rate makes sense: The hourly rate is $200 without a package. Ask Ira at the evaluation whether a few hourly sessions or a package fits your goals better.
What else affects the total price?
Travel and fuel surcharges may apply, credit cards are assessed 2.8% additional, and full payment for a package is due before training begins.
Have a dog who could use this?
Start with a 2–3 hour evaluation and first training visit at your home, $199, included in every package.
The rates page lists these terms:
- Additional travel and fuel surcharges may apply on service calls and all packages.
- Full payment for a package is due before training commences.
- Payment is accepted by Zelle, check, cash or credit card (credit cards assessed 2.8% additional).
- If a package is cancelled, completed sessions are prorated at the hourly rate.
For Henderson homes, any travel surcharge is confirmed before booking, according to the Henderson service area page.
Are group classes included in the price?
Yes, in two of the three packages. Fundamentals includes 15 group gatherings and Advanced includes a full season. Basics can add 8 gatherings for $189.
The group gatherings meet on Saturdays from 9 to 10 am at Bark Park, area 3, in Heritage Park, 350 S. Racetrack Rd., Henderson. They run October through April and pause May through September, when summer heat makes park sessions unsafe for dogs.
Group time lets your dog practice the same commands around other dogs, people and park distractions. It is also where CGC testing happens.
What isn't covered by a training package?
The packages exclude wild animals and dogs with severe aggression or complex behavioral needs that fall outside the program. Talk with Ira about suitability before you book.
If your dog has bitten, or you are worried about serious aggression, start with your veterinarian. The ASPCA advises a vet visit first to rule out medical causes, then working with a qualified behavior professional, such as a veterinary behaviorist or a certified applied animal behaviorist.
No trainer can promise a result for every dog. Progress depends on your dog's temperament, background and needs, and on regular practice between sessions.
How do you compare dog training prices?
Compare what you get for the price, not just the price. Look at the number of private sessions, whether you are taught alongside your dog, whether group practice is included and whether the terms are in writing.
